We agree that finding space to park your vehicle is as good as searching for a lost thing in Tulsi Baug, but that doesn’t imply you should park your vehicles under the flyover.
On the serious note, activists have highlighted the issue with PMC claiming that parking under flyovers causes traffic congestion and space is then misused for illegal activities.
Shriniwas Bonala, traffic planner of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), said,
The PMC never allowed parking under flyovers. Action will be taken against all those using the space under flyovers for parking because it is misuse of civic space. Parking there is illegal and strict action will be taken against those charging money for parking vehicles. The PMC will also inform police and seek action.
Warje, Shivajinagar, Deccan, Hadapsar, Wakdewadi, Satara Road and Katraj are some areas where you can easily spot bikes and cars crammed under the bridge
After looking at the vehicles parked randomly, the hawkers also get provoked to use this space, hence causing traffic congestion!
Similarly, under bridge space areas in Mumbai have also been declared as "no parking zone" by the state government.
Satish Kulkarni, head of PMC's estate department said,
The space under the flyovers is part of the civic properties. Its use without any permission is illegal. It may amount encroachment on public space and action according to it can be taken.
By looking at administration's estimate, the rise in the traffic is due to due to the 50% increase in the use of private vehicles. According to the data collated by the RTO, Pune seems to be adding at least 2 lakh vehicles every year.
Bikes on the footpath, cars under the bridge, what’s happening?
