So how many times have you cursed the NMC (under your breath or aloud) because you saw garbage pile up in your locality? And how many times have you actually done something about it?
With Nagpur contending a spot in the Smart City fray, it is necessary that citizens are as proactive in the improvement of the city as the authorities. To facilitate this, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation has launched the Swachh Nagpur app, a platform where you can report issues with garbage collection in your locality.
The app was launched by CM Devendra Fadnavis on September 11 this year. Currently available to Android users, this app enables users to enter information about garbage collection in their locality. Users receive a notification at a fixed time every day asking if the garbage has been cleared from their area for that day. If a user enters ‘No’, a detailed complaint can be lodged, complete with photographs.
When an issue is reported, it goes to the Health Officer’s department, who then allocates the issue to the ward officer of the concerned area. The officers aim to address the issue in the shortest time possible, usually within a 24-hour-period, and the progress is notified both to the municipal authorities and the users.
The app has been developed by Decos, a Netherlands-based company specialising in e-governance solutions. Decos developed an app called Fixi, which is being used in various municipalities in Holland. The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPNL), the city bus service in Pune also uses a similar app.
The app has been launched as a pilot project in Laxmi Nagar at present, with plans to expand to other areas of the city soon. With time, the app will also enable citizens to report other issues like potholes, malfunctioning street lamps etc.
