Toastmasters are the world leaders in communication and leadership development. The organization has been working for the improvement of speaking and leadership skills in over 142 countries through more than 15,900 clubs.

This iconic journey started way back in 1924 as a series of speaking clubs organized by Ralph C. Smedley, when he was working for the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Bloomington, Illinois in the United States.

Reacho had a chat with Mrs Piyali Kanabar, Club Extension Member and associated with the Toastmasters Club Nagpur since its inception in the city.

Motivation behind starting the club in Nagpur -

"We find a mammoth need for communication skills and leadership quality in the people of Nagpur. Dr. CA Tejinder Singh Rawal brought the Toastmasters Club to Nagpur with the vision of making the people of Nagpur aware about communication skills and improving their personal and professional skills. Along with Dr. T.S. Rawal, 28 other members from different fields commenced their journey with Toastmasters in the city in 2013."

Procedure of joining the club -

"People can come to the club as a guest. Although there is a system of charging of guest, but here in Nagpur we don’t charge our guest, they can come and see the activities and then take a decision to join the club. Nowadays, as we are very active on social media with our activities, and people directly can come and join".

To join Toastmasters Club the process is very simple, one has to deposit a minimum amount of $20 (Rs.1,300) in Toastmasters International’s bank account. Once you become a member of Toastmasters, you will remain a Toastmaster forever - that means you get the privilege to join the club anywhere around the world.

"Once you join the club you have to pay the fees i.e. annual fees or bi-annual. For six months the fees are $45 which is around Rs. 3,150 which includes the handling charges," she added.

Collaboration of colleges or corporate firms -

"If any colleges or corporate entity wants to collaborate with us they just have to call us and we’ll provide them with ample guidance and support to set up the club within their organisation."

Problems faced in Nagpur -

"People in Nagpur do not want to do hard work, they always want a shortcut to archive the goal. The laid-back attitude of the city makes them neglect the development of their communication skills. After finding many people in Nagpur speak English incorrectly and ineffectively, I took it upon myself to develop a pace of speaking with the assistance of Toastmasters".
