We have a wonderful news for city’s cricket lovers as the Vidarbha team has made it to the Ranji Trophy Finals. The team has performed exceedingly well in the tournament, this year and has now made history by reaching the finals for the first time!
Team Vidarbha beat eight times champions, team Karnataka in a nail-biting semi-final.
Vidarbha will now take on team Delhi in Indore on December 29.
Vidarbha won the toss and decided to bat, but as the first innings progressed, the team looked more confused than confident. It was somewhere in the middle of their second innings that the team got hold of their game and decided to fight back. Then there was no looking back.
In the second innings, Karnataka was bowled out for 192 chasing 198 after Vidarbha wiped out a first innings lead of 116 by scoring 313 in their second outing.
Pacer Rajneesh Gurbani gave his career-best figures of 7/68 in the second innings to run through the Karnataka batting despite stiff resistance by their lower order on the fifth and final day.
Wickets fell in at regular intervals for Karnataka with the batsmen looking clueless against Gurbani, who was the star of the show!
Earlier, Satish and Akshay Wadkar stitched a partnership of 72 runs for the fifth wicket to stretch Vidarbha’s lead.
The lower middle-order, led by Sarwate, contributed handsomely with the bat to take the team total past the 300-run mark.
But once Mithun's brisk stay was over, Sreenath Aravind (2) failed to deliver the goods.
In 2014-15, they qualified for the quarter-finals. But with the likes of Vijay Shankar, Murali Vijay, Dinesh Karthik scoring heavily for Tamil Nadu, Vidarbha didn’t qualify for the semis.
In 2015-16, they again qualified for the quarter-finals where they faced Saurashtra. Vidarbha lost by an innings and 85 runs. Next season, they didn't qualify for the knockouts.
But the long process of reviving Vidarbha cricket and competing well against the stronger teams had started. Wheels were set in motion.
Here’s hoping that team Vidarbha has a great run at the finals against Delhi!
