Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is planning to install 100 sanitary napkins and diapers disposals at around 10 places in the city.

The major step has been taken after a petition demanding enforcement of solid waste management rules, 2016 in the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The petition also demanded the manufacturers of sanitary napkins to provide wrappers for safe disposal.

“As a pilot project, the NMC will place ‘yellow’ dustbins inside 10 institutions including girls hostels, some colleges, and Regional Police Training School," TOI quoted a senior officer from the NMC’s sanitation department.

The yellow bins will be placed in the hostels, colleges and other places by NMC and Swachh Association.

“Though we have not decided on any charges yet, the NGO has advised the civic body to provide the service at a minimal monthly charge," the officer added.

However, according to the senior corporator Pragati Patil, it was NMC who in association with Swachh Nagpur had launched the scheme to provide proper disposal units for sanitary napkins on International Women’s Day in 2017.

Currently, as there is no sanitary napkins disposal unit by NMC in the city, people have to flush or dump it in the backyard of their homes. This results in problems like blockage of drains, land/water pollution and foul smell.

After collecting the waste, the agency responsible for proper disposal will transport it to Bhandewadi railway station area, where the biomedical waste disposal plant is situated.

Currently, both private and government hospitals of the city daily generate 2.5 to 3 tonnes of biomedical waste.

In the initial stage of the project, the waste will be collected by a private firm for a month. Later, NMC will observe the response and invite new firms or the existing company for collecting and disposal of the waste.

“If our initiative gets a good response, the NMC will provide yellow dustbins in all flat schemes, educational institutions and in public places including railway station, bus stops,” TOI further quoted the corporator.
