In a first, Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) women and child welfare committee have taken up an initiative of setting up a childcare centre and a rehabilitation centre for the elderly citizens.

NMC has finalized the Kachipura area for setting up the childcare centre. The civic body is yet to lock-in the location for the seniors’ rehabilitation centre.

Pragati Patil, the chairperson of women and child welfare committee, was the person behind conceiving the plan.

As of now, only two centres will be built on pilot basis.

“Most of the daily wage worker couples have no option but to leave their children alone at home while going to work. In such a situation, the possibility of such children, especially girls, falling prey to anti-social elements increases manifold. To prevent this, the childcare centre would be set up where the kids would be safe and also have chance to learn good things,” Patil said.

Patil added that the childcare centre will be run by either an NGO or a women’s SHG.

“Boys up to 5 years and girls up to 13 will be taken care of at the centre. We will encourage the workers to send lunch with their children to prevent from any untoward incident like food poisoning. We will also facilitate lunch and milk if the parents desire so. No fees will be charged from the parents,” she said.

Speaking about the idea behind setting up of the rehabilitation centre for senior citizens, Patil revealed that center is primarily for the benefit of weaker sections of the society and the middle class families.

“The centre will have temporary as well as permanent arrangements for senior citizens. We will keep the charges nominal for senior citizens,” she added.

Patil further added that special provision of funds will be made in the budget of women and child welfare committee every year in order to run and maintain the centres.

“One centre each for childcare and senior citizens will be operated on pilot basis. NMC will increase the number of centres depending on the success of the pilot project and also demand,” she said.

Currently, the committee operates night shelters for the homeless people in the city. Many other initiatives are also taken up so as to uplift the women SHG, etc.
