Nagpur readies itself as the seventh edition of ‘Beejotsav exhibition-cum-sale’ commences from tomorrow. The three-day ‘Beejotsav 2019- National Seed Festival’ will be inaugurated at 1pm on Friday and will be held at the Mure Memorial Lawns.
The festival aims to introduce and provide organic and affordable food for the consumers. It also attempts to reduce the exploitation of farmers by holding discussions, talks and awareness campaigns, distributing indigenous seeds, having organic product stalls, etc. The festival believes in being the platform which brings the farmers and their produce directly to the customers.
Keeping in mind the aim of the festival, the organizing group has invited two women farmers from Bhandara to inaugurate the event. They will perform ‘Bijaai puja’ - a puja of the seeds, to mark the event open. On Day 2 and 3, sessions and discussions will be held from 10am to 1pm. The exhibition and sale will open post the session from 1pm and go on until 10pm.
‘Nagpur Beejotsav’ group has been actively working since the last 7 years towards conservation of seeds, organic farming and cultivation of toxic free food. It also adopts various projects including those of urban solid waste management and production of fertilizers from waste.
Akash Naoghare, one of the fellow organizers, said, “We are expecting the crowd who visit us in the next 3-4 days to be more aware about the food they’re eating. When people are told about the journey about their food, right when it is in the farm until it reaches the place, they tend to value food more. We all sit down to read and find out more information about our phones when we just buy it. But when it comes to food, we don’t tend to do that. And ironically, food is more important than our phones.”
This year’s main attraction is the diversity of seeds that will available. People from West Bengal, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and various other states will bring in seeds from their region to the festival. The exhibition will have 60 stalls in total. These stalls are divided into two main domain viz. organic farm produce and sustainable lifestyle products. As the name suggests, the farm produce will be the ones that will offer grains, seeds, etc. whereas the sustainable lifestyle products will have items such as smokeless chulha, slow fashion garments, soaps that don’t pollute water and many more.
A variety of food stalls serving organic food such as gurr ki jalebi, mahua ki kheer, mahua bonde, nachni laddoo, etc. will also be set up. Apart from this, there will also be stalls of healthy, wholesome foods.
The festival concludes on Sunday at 10pm.
