The city traffic police on Friday booked as many as five school bus drivers for drunk driving. This major step has raised a big question on the safety of school children.

The measure has been taken under the guidance of DCP (traffic) Ravindrasinh Pardeshi during the ongoing 'School Safety' drive.

The drive starts at 9 am which later continues till 3 pm, where city police inspect the vehicles in different squares. The drive has initiated action against 1,000 vehicles and 404 drivers which includes 108 buses, 147 vans and 149 autorickshaws carrying school children.

While checking that whether the driver is carrying excess children or not, the team spotted that five drivers were under the influence of liquor.

However, the children onboard were safely dropped to their respective schools by the police.

The legal course of action has already started against the accused.

"Later, we brought the drivers Vijay Choudhari, Sachin Onduskar, Jimmy Prince Anthony and Sheikh Feroz Hussain Shaikh Ansar Hussain to traffic office in Civil Lines where we performed an Alco meter check on these drivers. It was found that their blood alcohol level was above the permissible limit," TOI quoted a Senior PI.
