Recently, there have been many complaints regarding the exorbitant parking charges levied by Nagpur Central Railway contractor for two-wheelers.

RTI activist Avinash Prabhune, who has threatened to move to the court against the contractor and Central Railway for taxing common man, told Times of India,

"When a railway platform ticket is valid for three hours, should cycle stand contractor charge money for eight hours?"

For car parking, the contractor on the east side of the station charges Rs 10 for three hours, whereas the two-wheeler parking contractor charges Rs 10 for eight hours.

From April 1, Central Railway doubled parking charges after appointing a new contractor. Prior to this, the parking stand was managed by railway employees as the earlier contractor had left midway citing lack of profit as the key reason.

Backing the move Central Railway PRO justified,

"For last 10 years there was no hike. Even in malls people pay Rs 10-15 for two-wheeler parking for a couple of hours, so why the fuss at a railway station."

Even office-bearers of rail users' body have demanded a rollback of high parking charges. Bharatiya Yatri Kendra (BYK) general secretary Basant Shukla said parking conditions put forth by the contractor are clearly in his favor.

"The conditions printed on the tickets state that contractor will not be responsible for any form of damage to vehicles. If this is so, what for the money is being charged," asked Shukla.

The parking area is a total mess, there is no proper cementing and the water is logged during rains. Also, there is no shade and concreting hasn’t been done for years.

There are no contact details of concerned Railway officials which make it impossible for people to complain to authorities.

Well, we hope that the problem comes to the attention of the concerned official and it is solved soon.
