In a major step taken by Mahametro, Zero Mile, Nagpur's popular landmark will be developed as one of the major hotspots of the city for visitors under the Heritage Walk Project.
Earlier, the Zero Mile had always been ignored by Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) and Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). But now it looks like things will change for better.
In addition to Zero Mile, the Heritage Walk Project will also cover the Gowari Memorial and Martyrs' Memorial. The project will also work towards making the surroundings greener, with benches to sit. This walk will link all the old monuments with the new ones.
There are even plans to construct a peace plaza near the Gowari Memorial. An art gallery or an exhibition hall will be built on the ground floor of the British Residency after its renovation.
There is also a proposal to build a survey museum (Sarvekshan Sangrahalaya) near Zero Mile by architects of French firm Enia Shival Manchanda and Atri Joshi. Instruments which were used for the survey in the 19th century along with some old photographs will be on display in the museum. The museum will be a tribute to the surveyors who mapped India.
An artwork #NagpurMetro is designed by artist Rubel Nagi, will also be placed near information center of Mahametro.
According to the Mahametro’s plan, this artwork will act as a backdrop where people can take photographs.
The history wall which will connect the station to Zero Mile passing through Shaheed Smarak and Gowari Memorial will also be constructed under this project. The 'Wall of History' will display the important events in Nagpur's history.
Here is the complete list of places which will be included in the Heritage Walk Project:
URBAN SPINE OR WALL OF HISTORY
The wall of history will start from Zero Mile metro station to Zero Mile and cover Shaheed Smarak, Gowari Memorial. The wall will showcase the history of Nagpur city and other important events. The conceptualization of the wall is set as a symbol for Sitabuldi Fort located right across on the Sitabuldi Hill.
BRITISH RESIDENCY BUILDING
The building which is a located right next to the proposed site for Heritage Walk will be renovated and the ground floor will be renovated as an exhibition space or an art gallery. A large number of travellers are expected to visit this complex.
MUSEUM OF SURVEY
As the city presently has hardly any museum, this survey museum or Sarvekshan Sanghralya could be a major attraction in the coming days. The various important instruments used for the survey in Indian history will be displayed here. This museum will be a tribute to the historic surveyors for their commendable efforts in mapping India.
Mumbai based designer Rubel Nagi will display an artwork #NagpurMetro. This project is expected to become one of the important attractions in Heritage Walk project. The photos which will be clicked in front of the #NagpurMetro artwork will help in the promotion of the city.
ZERO MILE STATION
This is the most important part of the whole project. This will be a huge 20-story building, which will contain four parking levels — two in the basement, one each on the ground and mezzanine floors. Apart from the platforms and technical operations, the building will also host commercial space comprising hotels, offices, shops, banquet halls, restaurants, etc.
