According to city crime statistics of 2017, there were no murder cases that surfaced in the Imambada police station (PS) jurisdiction. Imambada is considered as the most vulnerable area which is quite crime-prone, especially when it comes to murders.

On an average, there is one case of murder every four days across the areas of 30 police stations, which collates up to 85 murders in 2017.

However, in the Imambada PS, there have been no murder cases in the last 49 days. The last case was registered on October 3, 2016. The statistics are a completely surprising given for the fact that the area once had 16 history-sheeters, 32 known criminals, four major gangs and a couple of smaller ones, based here.

The zero number can be attributed to the fact that strict action was taken against 43 criminals of the area in years 2016 and 2017.

Formed in 1993, Imambada PS includes the Ajni and Ganeshpeth areas as well. The areas were highly susceptible to crime because of the aforementioned anti-society elements. About 39 murders took place in the area from years 2007 to 2016. In 2016 itself there were four murder cases.

Around 333 preventive actions were taken in 2016 which is why there were no murders in 2017.

In 2017, Imambada PS banished the 16 history-sheeters and invoked Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities (MPDA) Act against three tough goons. The police kept a track of places where bootlegging and gambling dens at places like Jat Tarodi, Barasignal, TB Ward, Untkhana etc. Approximately, 102 cases were registered against bootleggers and 58 cases against those found guilty under the Gambling Act. Last year, the numbers were 65 and 53 respectively.

Ramakant Durge, senior PI of Imambada police station said that the accomplishment was because of high vigilance towards any anti-social activities.

"We had stressed on patrolling and preventive action. Promptness in dealing with even trivial issues ensure they did not snowball," he said.

Since there was a tight watch over the four major gangs, the gangwars had halted fully. Goon Tarachand Khillare’s gang members were jailed after being charged under the MPDA. The Felix gang too was externed. Malik gang of Siraspeth and Bhikku Raja gang are now being watched closely by the police.
