One will nod their head in agreement when we say that it takes a village to facelift the kharra-stained walls of the Indian railway stations. And why not, after all the brownish-orange color is not just a specific for the nooks and corners now, but has also taken over the pillars and staircases.
But this Nagpur-based artist defied our notion and single-handedly went on to do the beautification works of the Ajni Railway Station. Priyanka Rohan Patil, a city artist revamped the all-women’s station with her striking wall art and murals.
Patil was first invited to beautify the station in 2017. Her work earned praises a plenty which landed her with the re-beautification work again earlier this year. However, this year she was asked to keep her art work centric to the theme of ‘women’. Ajni railway Station became the third station in India to have an all-women staff in 2018. Keeping up with theme and their motto, the station authorities roped Patil to do the wall artwork.
The Ajni railway station works is just one of the crown jewels in Priyanka’s diadem of works. She has also done up the walls of Ajni Loco Shed and Khaperkheda Power Plant with her paintings in the past.
Born and brought up in Nagpur, Priyanka went on to pursue her masters in Fine Arts from Sir JJ School of Art in Mumbai – one of the best in India. She has specialized in wall arts and doing up murals.
After her marriage Priyanka moved to Bengaluru with her husband. But that did not deter her passion for painting. She landed herself with the prospect of wall painting the Rangoli Art Auditorium that is located near the landmark MG Road Metro Station. Impressed by her work, she was offered a job in the creative domain in one of the noted corporate companies.
But it was no sooner that she and her husband found themselves coming back to Nagpur to explore their entrepreneurial side and further Priyanka’s passion. The couple now runs a venture that offers art and creative services.
Her breakthrough moment after relocating to the city was when she was invited to beautify the Ajni Station again. This time around she was given a theme close to her heart and strongly champions. The station authorities asked her to abide by the theme ‘Women and various roles played by women in society’. She was lauded for her work by the Railway Senior Authorities on the occasion of Women’s Day this year.
Looking by the artwork, we can surely say that Priyanka has done an incredible job. We hope she bags many more such projects in future to beautify the city spaces!
