Mahendra Singh Dhoni, former captain of the Indian cricket team is all set to start his cricket academy in Nagpur by September. The academy will be launched in the Gaikwad-Patil International School at Dongargaon. The residential cricket academy is set to kick off in collaboration with the SGR Sports Academy of Nagpur.
Already present in quite some cities of India, the academy will now make its way in Nagpur. Students of age group 4 years and above can enroll themselves in the academy. World class coaching, training, guidance by experts is the USP of the academy.
Mihir Diwakar, managing director of MS Dhoni Cricket Academy, announced the plans of commencing the academy in the city. Diwakar, who is also a former India Under-19 and Bihar cricketer, revealed that the coaching plan for the academy has been chalked out by MSD himself. He also said that Dhoni will timely and frequently make a visit to the academy amidst his other ventures. The aim behind doing so is to narrate his share of experiences with the upcoming cricketers.
City’s branch of the academy will be the fifth in India. A franchise of Dhoni Academy has been launched in Dubai of lately.
Speaking at a press conference of Monday, Diwakar said, "We have already started at Lucknow, Varanasi, Noida, and Bokara but this will be the first residential academy. The trainees of the academy will study at the Gaikwad-Patil School and stay in their premises. We are looking to get admission of around 150 kids."
Not many know that Diwaker has played cricket with Dhoni for quite some years. As a friend and fellow, Diwaker has assured that things will be in line and order by the time the coaching programme takes off.
"The school ground is very beautiful. Ten practice wickets will be prepared and the academy will have all the modern equipment. We will have an expert coaching panel to look after the trainees. Kids above seven years will be enrolled in the academy. To promote women's cricket, the first 11 players will be given admission free of cost at the academy," said Diwakar.
Mohan Gaikwad, chairman of Gaikwad-Patil Group, said, "We are thankful to MS Dhoni Cricket Academy for giving us this opportunity. As per their requirements, we will develop the infrastructure and in future not only cricket but we will also introduce other games at our sprawling 30-acre campus."
Gaikwad further added that the school hostel has a capacity to accommodate 400 students and that they will have to make a commitment of five years with the academy.
Mangesh Raut, head of SGR Sports Academy, said that the budding cricketers will be given a plethora of opportunity to national and international matches.
