The Nagpur Municipal Corporation has joined hands with the Lokmat Group to erect a 200-feet tall Tricolour flagpole at Kasturchand Park. Union Minister for Transport and Shipping, Nitin Gadkari performed the Bhoomipujan for the same on Friday, in the presence of Mayor Pravin Datke and former MP Vijay Darda.
The flag, measuring 90 feet by 60 feet, will be comparable in dimensions to the flag at Connaught Place in New Delhi, which was the largest flag in India until this year, when it lost the top spot to the flag at Sanjeevaiah Park in Hyderabad.
The decision, however, is also facing some criticism, owing to the deplorable condition of the ground at present. The ground, along with the memorial constructed in the centre, is a haven for homeless peddlers and also double up as an illegal parking space.
We can only hope that with the construction of this flagpole, the vicinity will also be beautified, maintained and the Tiranga will soon be unfurled in premises that accord it due honour!
