Harish Salve, who argued for India against Pakistan at the International Court of Justice in the Kulbhushan Jadhav espionage case is arguably the most expensive yet humble lawyer in the country today. Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj revealed that the lawyer charged only a token amount of Re 1 to defend Kulbhushan Jadhav at the ICJ.
Those who don’t know Salve will be surprised to learn that he is a Nagpurkar!
Salve was born in a Marathi family to the late NKP Salve- who was a veteran Congress leader and a Chartered Accountant- and mother Ambriti, who was a doctor. He spent his childhood at Sadar, Nagpur. He did his schooling from SFS High School.
Following his father’s footsteps, Salve at first was inclined towards pursuing CA. He is a qualified CA, specializing in Taxation. Later he was inspired to pursue law by late Nani Palkhivala, a renowned tax lawyer.
He started his legal career in 1980 as an intern at J. B. Dadachandji & Co where he later became a full-time lawyer. Salve was later nominated as Senior Counsel at the Delhi High Court. He served as Solicitor General between 1999 to 2002.
Salve has a celebrated clientele that includes the Ambanis, the Mittals, Tatas, Vodafone and many others. Some of his major cases include the Anti-Dumping case in the Supreme Court of India. He also represented Vodafone in its $2.5 billion tax dispute with the Indian Government.
Other cases include Forest Conservation case and the Delhi Vehicular Pollution case. In the year 2015, Salve was awarded Padma Bhushan for his services.
