China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) would be supplying 69 coaches to the Nagpur Metro. It bagged the contract with a lowest bid worth Rs. 851 crore. It did beat BEML and Titagarh Wagons Limited in the bidding process. Nagpur Metro Rail Project has a total 38.215 kilometers of railway corridor. It would be sub-divided into north-south and east-west corridors.
In the next administrative procedures as per the report, a letter of intent was passed to the CRRC Vice President Mr. Zhang Min Yu by Nagpur Metro Rail Corporation’s (NMRC) MD Mr. Brijesh Dixit. Chief Minister of the state Mr. Devendra Fadnavis was also present during the process which happened in Nagpur on 15th October 2016.
NMRC MD Mr. Brijesh Dixit was quoted stating, ”CRRC has been awarded the contract to design, manufacture, supply, testing and commissioning of passenger rolling stock with annual maintenance for 10 years. There will be 23 trains of 3 cars each. The cost per car is Rs 10.41 crore excluding annual maintenance contract. It is a new benchmark for the lowest cost in the country.'' He further added the coaches would have state of art facilities viz. air conditioning, automatic doors, obstacle detection, Wi-Fi & communication based controls.
On the Make-In-India front, it was told CRRC would be investing Rs. 1500 crore in phases. These funds would be used to establish a rolling stock manufacturing unit at Butibori, MIDC. CRRC is the same firm which has supplied coaches to Ghaziabad & Gurgaon metro projects in the past.
Interestingly, currently an anti-China wave is going around in India. Many campaigns are being run to urge the public to boycott Chinese products. The rationale being given is the economic support provided by China to Pakistan. Also the two other companies which lost in the bid are Indian companies. So we would love to have your opinion on the contract being passed to the Chinese CRRC by allowing them to bid in the process.
