Nagpur’s very own Banwarilal Purohit will now Govern Assam, adding a feather to his already very illustrious career!
Purohit was elected to the Maharashtra Assembly on a Congress ticket in 1979 and 1980, after which the party sent him to the Lok Sabha.
In 1984, he was elected to the 8th Lok Sabha as Congress MP and was re-elected in 1989 on the same ticket.
In 1991, he reportedly took part in Kar Seva in Ayodhya, leading to his expulsion from the Congress. So he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party when it launched a movement to build a Ram Temple in Ayodhya, and contested Lok Sabha elections in 1991 as the party's candidate. But he lost to Datta Meghe of Congress. He won his next Lok Sabha election in 1996, but lost again in 2009 to Vilas Muttemwar of Congress.
2. The Hitavada
The former MP is also the Managing Editor of The Hitavada, an English daily founded by Gopal Krishna Gokhale in 1911. The newspaper was formerly owned by Congress leader Vidya Charan Shukla, and was taken over by Purohit and Company in 1978. Since then, The Hitavada has been a household favourite of all of Nagpur, Raipur and the rest of Central India. His son Rajendra Purohit is the editor-in-chief of this popular daily which also undertakes children’s activities through the very famous Twinkle Club, which is the brainchild of Purohit himself.
