Having born in Sundernagar, a small town in Himachal Pradesh and spending his childhood and adolescent years in Dehradun and Lucknow, Grover was an absolute outsider to the big bad world of Bollywood. He started his B-town journey by writing for shows like Oye It’s Friday! and The Great Indian Comedy Show. His desperation to making it big led him to sign the 2010 dud ‘Accident on Hill Road’ starring Celina Jaitley.
Of The Initial Struggles And Success That Followed Later!
Soon he realised his mistake and decided to take a break until he met Anurag Kashyap, through an indie film website called Passion for Cinema. This was the turning point in Grover’s career. Grover then went on to write lyrics for Kashyap’s next films like The Girl In Yellow Boots and Gangs of Wasseypur 1 & 2. And there’s was no looking back!
The Gangs of Wasseypur series went on to click with critics and masses alike and the songs were appreciated too!
Of The Rise And Rise Of Varun Grover!
2015 can be considered as a golden year in Grover’s life! The lyrics for song ‘Moh Moh Ke Dhaage’ from that year’s much loved Dum Laga Ke Haisha fetched him National Film Award for Best Lyrics among other awards. The same year, Neeraj Ghaywan’s directorial debut Masaan brought laurels for Grover as a writer. The film received a whopping 5-minute standing ovation at the prestigious Festival De Cannes.
As of 2016, Grover has written the lyrics for Shah Rukh Khan starrer ‘Fan’ and Shahid Kapoor’s Udta Punjab. But his work is not limited to just Hindi films.
The Non-Filmy Side of Varun Grover!
Grover is a well-renowned stand-up comedian and his subtle digs at current happenings in the country through this forum have often made headlines.
Grover is known as someone who speaks his mind. His subtle digs at current happenings in the country through this forum have often made headlines. Moreover, he was one of the first celebrities to express his opinion on the much recent TVF controversy.
Grover is multi-talented, no doubt! His works, on one hand, reflect the good, old rustic charm of India, but also touch hearts of those living in cosmopolitan cities, on the other. In the times, when we are forced to listen to lyrics that are highly misogynistic and vulgar, Grover’s words are like a breath of fresh air.
Very few have guts to leave a well-paying 10 to 7 job and pursue their passion. And Grover’s example tells us just that! The kind of work he has done in the last five years is quite remarkable. His ideas, his way of looking towards life and his opinions prove why he’s one of the most progressive voices of the youth.
