Angela Ponce created history when she became the first-ever transgender woman to be crowned Miss Universe Spain. Soon, she will represent Spain in Miss Universe 2018, which is set to take place in the Philippines this year.
Ponce took to Instagram to make the announcement.
Ponce was crowned six years after the Miss Universe organization lifted the ban on transgender contestants in the competition.
This decision was made after transgender model Jenna Talackova fought a long battle and challenged the authorities. The organization, which was then headed by the current US president Donal Trump, was highly criticized by celebrity lawyer Gloria Allred.
However, Trump refused the allegations by saying, “We made the decision two days before we even heard that Allred was involved. Had I known she was involved, maybe I wouldn’t have made that decision because she’s so easy to beat.”
Ponce’s transition was completed in 2014.
While talking to a tabloid she said, "Society is not educated for diversity, it's what made me go public, I mean, here I am and I'm not weird, I just have a different story, a woman who came to life differently but I'm a woman."
