A dead whale was washed on the coast of southern Thailand last week. The cause of the death of the whale is said to be the consumption of as many as 80 plastic bags, according to the officials.
On Monday, the small male pilot whale was found nearly dead in the southern province of Songkhla. The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources of Thailand revealed that the rescuers tried their best to tend for the whale but all their efforts went futile. Before breathing its last, the whale coughed up and spat five plastic bags.
A necropsy was conducted, unveiling a horrific truth. About 17 pounds of plastic, amounting to 80 plastic bags, was found in the whale’s stomach.
While speaking to Reuters, Jatuporn Buruspat, director-general of the marine and coastal resources department said that the whale assumed plastics bags to be food, leading it to eat them up.
Survey says that Thailand is one of the largest polluters in the world when it comes to plastic waste. Over 1 million ton of garbage is dumped into the sea every year, according to the country’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
In September, the ministry declared that that country will now pay attention towards eco-friendly ways of doing away with the waste that is produced every year.
Thon Thamrongnawasawat, a marine biologist, and lecturer at Kasetsart University, told The Guardian that approximately 300 marine animals such as whales, dolphins and sea turtles, die in the waters of Thailand solely because of consuming plastic.
“It’s a huge problem,” he said. “We use a lot of plastic.”
