It has been reported that the Scotland Yard on Tuesday arrested the absconding liquor baron Vijay Mallya in London and will be presented before a court in Westminster. India had demanded his extradition under a bilateral treaty with the UK. Mallya has been accused of many financial irregularities and loan defaults worth Rupees 9000 crore.
In February 2016, the government had handed over a formal request for the industrialist's extradition to the UK High Commission. Mallya fled to Britain in March 2016 after an arrest warrant was issued by the court for his failure to pay about Rs 9,000 crore owed by his Kingfisher Airline. Mallya had also failed to show up before the investigators at the Enforcement Directorate. Hopefully, this will now take the case forward and simply further procedures.
