The entire world witnessed the glorious 90th Academy Awards ceremony that took place in Los Angeles, a few hours ago.

Embracing diversity and equality in the film fraternity seemed to be the major themes the event brought into light.

Another major highlights of the event, for Indians, was that in the annual “Memoriam Montage”, tribute was paid to the life and work of Bollywood icons Shashi Kapoor and Sridevi, along with other members of the fraternity who passed away in the last year.

A musical tribute was paid to the deceased Bollywood stars by Eddie Vedder, who sang Tom Petty's "Room at the top".

The segment was introduced by actress Jennifer Garner, in her introductory remarks, paid tribute to the late actress Audrey Hepburn, saying, "There is no joy without sorrow."

Shashi Kapoor, who made his Bollywood debut in 1961, with the film ‘Dharmaputra’, passed away in December last year.

Passionate about theater, the versatile actor dedicated his life for the revival of the dying art. Mumbai’s iconic Prithvi Theater is the result of Shashi Kapoor’s hard work and dedication. This dynamic actor has also left his mark on international cinema.

To commemorate his unparalleled contribution to Indian cinema, Kapoor was awarded the third highest civilian honour Padma Bhushan in 2011 and in 2015 he was bestowed with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.

With her sudden demise on the 24th February, Sridevi left the entire Indian film fraternity in shock. Sridevi, who started out as a child artist in Tamil films when she was 4, was already an established name in the southern film industry when she came to Bollywood.

Regarded as Bollywood’s first female superstar, Sridevi had acted in 300 films in her 50-year long career.

To celebrate her contribution to Indian cinema, she was awarded the fourth highest civilian honour, Padma Shri in 2013.

The two Bollywood icons featured in the Memoriam Montage along with John Heard, Tony Anne Walker, Jane Foray, Robert Osborne, Martin Landau, Glenne Headly, Roger Moore, George A. Romero and Jerry Lewis.
