Look at the sky! What do you see? If it is a day, you’ll see the Sun. If it is night, you will see the stars. If you are lucky enough you might see the Sirius or the Venus in a clear sky.

But with clouds and now light pollution, stargazing seems like a thing of the past. With busy schedules, we don’t even have time to visit planetariums or watch Nat Geo. So this artist from Rome who is very fascinated by celestial bodies has found a very creative way of exploring space.

Maria Elena makes planet shaped lamps from recycled outdoor/garden globes and decorates them by hand using non-toxic paint. She paints them using scientific pictures as a reference to ensure that the craters and depressions are copied to near perfection and her being an astrophysicist helps her cause.

“Every moon has six layers, each to give a different effect,” Maria Elena told Bored Panda, adding, “To make one moon takes about 4-6 hours of work. For the planet, it takes longer because there are more layers and, in some places, the color is very thick so it dries very slowly. NASA often releases new images, so I have to study them and change my paintings according to new discoveries”

“It’s like the real moon you see up in the sky: You can tell the depressions, the craters, etc”

Maria Elena likes social work and came up with the idea while trying to raise money for animal charities

“Until now (I started 2 years ago), every single penny I earned went to charity. I try to help any kind of animal, but, so far, I rescued only dogs and cats. At the moment I live with 8 adult cats," she says.

“Every day, before painting, I do my yoga practice, to give to the moon a good vibe and energy. As an astrophysicist, I am quite rational, but I believe that…people can feel I have put my best efforts to give them something positive that can spread joy and peace”, she adds.

The products sell under the name Pulsar Moonlight.
