The iconic British singer George Michael who started his career with the band ‘Wham!’ died today. The famous pop star, who launched his career in the 1980s and later continued as a successful singer as a solo performer, reportedly “passed away peacefully at home”. He was only 53.
The Grammy Award-winning pop star was born in London on June 25th, 1963 and has sold more than 100 million albums in his four decade long career. He gave various chartbusters and besides, was under treatment for pneumonia, performed at the 2012 summer Olympic games.
Michael was the lead vocalist and star of the band ‘Wham’. Ironically, one of his most memorable hits till date remains the song 'Last Christmas'. The track is a festive classic released in 1984. It won hearts all over the world and is played every year at Christmas time.
Moments after his death, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan paid condolence to the star and tweeted, “Very sad to hear the news about George Michael. An incredible talent who brought joy to millions of us with his music”.
Many renowned and eminent personalities have taken to Twitter to express their grief and shock on Michael's passing.
