Telangana really has something amazing to offer tourists, and it surely can’t get any better than this. A district central jail in the state is inviting people to experience criminal detention and the best part is you don’t even need a criminal record for that.
Located in the Medak district, at a distance of 70 km from Hyderabad, the Sangareddy District Central Jail is offering tourists the chance to experience how it feels to be a prisoner. All you’ve got to do is pay the price of Rs 500, and you can spend 24 hours in the jail.
Built by the Nizams in 1796, this 220-year old central jail is nothing less than a heritage site. The jail was converted into a museum in June 2016. The concept of turning it into a ‘kind of jail experience’ was simply an extension of this idea.
The initiative termed as ‘Feel the Jail’ offers patrons a novel chance to experience exactly the same way a prisoner does. They are provided with all the requirements like a uniform, bedding, and other facilities, strictly as per the state prison manual. Not only that, the patrons will be made to follow the daily routine of a jail inmate that includes waking up at five in the morning, cleaning your own cell, planting of saplings, some labour work and much more, as depicted in the video:
Even the food will be provided as per the rules and regulations of the jail. While tea will be given at 6:30 am, a breakfast of idli will be given at 7:30 am. Lunch, consisting of dal, rice, and sambhar will be served between 10:30 am and 11 am, while a dinner of curry, rice, and curd will be given at 5 pm.
Well, it's probably convincing if you are thinking why would anyone want to do something like that? But, as a ‘guest prisoner’, it would be an experience of a lifetime. Just decide for yourself, if you would like to add the 'guest prisoner' experience as a part of your travels.
