Hundreds of Syrian refugees finally returned to their homeland from Arsal, Lebanon. Earlier, Lebanon government had encouraged over 1 million Syrian refugees that it hosts, to move back to their homes by voluntary repatriation.
Syrian refugees fled their war-struck homeland back in 2013. The refugees were headed for the Qalamoun region of Syria, which is just a few hours’ drive from the camps they have been staying in.
Relatives and friends were seen waving tearful goodbyes to the returnees who will now have to face severe hardships in their homeland.
The number of returnees is still insignificant to the number of refugees staying in Lebanon. The Arsal region itself hold nearly 50,000 to 60,000 refugees. But the occasion is seen as a positive start for the Lebanese government who promotes the refugees to reconcile with their homeland.
ABout 3,000 refugees have registered to return to their home in the following weeks.
