We all have heard stories from people or seen for ourselves, someone reacting extraordinarily and claiming to hear voices or see ghosts. Obviously we are not talking about the tantriks or black magic stuff here. There are some people, roughly 1 out of 100 according to reports, who claim to see ghosts. Ever wondered why these people behave in this manner? Sometimes people are actually being honest and science explains their affliction. The disease is called Schizophrenia which is a long term mental health condition that causes a range of hallucinations, delusions and changes in behavior which start occurring from the age of 16. When people fail to understand between reality and illusions, which lead to abnormality, the mental disorder is called schizophrenia. It affects how a person thinks, feels and acts and the afflicted personn has difficulty distinguishing between what is real and what is imaginary; may be unresponsive or withdrawn; and may have difficulty expressing normal emotions in social situations.

The main causes are not yet known. Experts believe that it may because of genes, environment, and some chemical imbalance in the brain or stress in family relationships.

While auditory hallucinations are more common than visual ones, the seeing and hearing differs from person to person and two people never get the same hallucinations. For instance, one patient could see a small girl who always scratched at his feet. He could feel the scratching and see the blood coming out. While another woman saw a young girl in 1800’s attire who, she believed, was her friend. The woman would talk with the girl and the girl told her that she was the “chosen one”. Some saw faces without eyes or mouths; some saw babies standing and it all differed. People actually hear their names but there is nobody around or they see figures and ghosts around them. Delusions are firmly-held ideas that a person has despite clear and obvious evidence that it isn’t true. Then the other symptom is hallucinations which are sounds or other sensations experienced as real, although they exist only in the person's mind. Also when they speak incoherently, or say illogical things like  made-up words or phrases that only have meaning to the patient or repeat words and statements; it is identified as a sign of schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a lifelong disorder and unfortunately there is presently no treatment for it. There is a way to find out whether a person is suffering from schizophrenia or not, but there is no such medication or treatments and sometimes only counseling helps with the patients. If you have someone whom you love and who is dealing with it, the most important thing you can do motivate them, since experts believe this is all because of depression. Another thing people can do is make them understand and still treat them equally. Although management of the disease and looking after a patient becomes a great issue in some cases but one can try to ameliorate the damage that the disease causes.
