The #MeToo campaign took the internet in a whirlwind of realization of the magnitude of sexual abuse. Women from all walks of life came together to tell the world their story of sexual abuse. From Alyssa Milano to that ex-employee at High Spirits to my kid sister, they all lined up on the internet.
One such woman who was extremely moved and took this shaming to another level is Raya Sarkar. A law student of the University of California, Raya listed out around 69 professors from India and across, tagging them as ‘sexual offenders’. The professors belong to universities like Jawaharlal Nehru University, Indian Institute of Technology (Bhubaneswar), Tata Institute of Social Sciences and Film and Television Institute of India.
The revelation, which happened on Raya’s Facebook timeline, garnered polarized views. While some sharply criticized, other stood in cohesion to Raya’s move.
People who stood in support-
In an interview to a newspaper, Raya claims her list is based on conversations and first-person accounts via various forms of social media interactions like WhatsApp, Facebook, etc. These stories either came to her directly or through her friends, is what Raya said when asked about the authenticity of her ‘list.
Even though the post found various supporters from across the globe, there were many who criticized her.
Some doubted the authenticity saying the list was just another way of bringing out ‘casteism’ for Raya is an ‘Ambedkarite’. Others stood up for the so-called ‘abusers’ and called this list a sham.
Some institutions like the FTII showed solidarity support to their professors standing up for them. Read here.
Sarkar also opened up on Facebook about the death threats she has received.
Amidst all this, her account was blocked by Facebook for reasons unclear.
Her supporters staged a protest on the blocking action.
While Raya is currently unavailable for comments of any sorts, we cannot vouch for the authenticity. Not the ones to disrespect the abused who came forward, we stand neutral bringing you both the sides of the story.
