Listing down all the gods and deities that exist in India seems next to impossible, since there are more than 35 crore deities that are prayed to. If we still go on counting, then India will definitely have a personal god for each of its countrymen. But the heartening fact is that India has temples from where people never return dissatisfied and sad! We bring you some of the temples and shrines where people believe that God really listens to your pleas:
1. Ajmer Sharif
People say that no prayer is unanswered at the Ajmer Sharif Dargah. Historical records say that the Mughal Emperor Akbar walked to the Dargah all the way from Delhi to pray for an heir. Soon after that he was blessed with a son. The Dargah is the oldest in South Asia, and receives footfalls from people of all religions.
2. Tirupati Balaji Temple
The Lord of this temple is Lord Venkateshwara, an avatar of Vishnu. Built in the 9th century, this is the oldest temple in India . To get their wishes fulfilled, many devotees make an offering of their hair in this temple and are granted boons by the Lord.
3. Kashi Vishwanath Temple
Also known as one of the Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, Kashi is supposed to be the deity’s favourite city and is a must visit pilgrimage spot for Hindus. The people visiting here believe that Lord Shiva listens to their prayers and feel more connected to the Divine on visiting the temple.
4. Miskin Shah Shrine

The shrine of Miskin Shah in Jamshedpur is a stop for millions of people who visit the shrine before their interview at the embassy. The shrine is believed to answer requests of students, visa-seekers and even the unemployed, all you have to do is give a copy of your ID card or passport!
5. Neelkanth Mahadev Temple
Hindu mythology says that Lord Shiva consumed poison to save the world-which turned his throat blue- and this temple is the exact spot where it happened. Therefore, the temple is known as Neelkanth Mahadev meaning ‘Blue Throated One’. The temple is situated in the midst of the dense forests and mountain ranges of Uttarakhand. People believe that Lord Shiva will save them too from the troubles of the world just like he saved the world itself.
6. Kedarnath Temple
Situated in the high Himalayan mountains, the temple, again housing Lord Shiva is revered as one of the sacred Char Dhams in Hinduism. According to Hindu mythology, this is the place where the great Pandavas visited to seek the ultimate Divine and so people visit here in hope of attaining moksha.
7. Vaishno Devi Temple
Goddess Durga is venerated as ‘Sherawali Mata’- the one who mounts a tiger, in this temple in Jammu and Kashmir. People believe that only those who are pure of heart and worthy can make this dangerous journey since the temple in the caves is reached after a treacherous climb up the mountain.
8. Sai Baba Temple
The only deity in India whose devotees include both Hindus and Muslims! This temple is situated in Shirdi and is one of the unique places in India where both communities go. The saint Sai Baba performed many miracles and has millions of devotees. So even after his death, people follow him and believe in him.
9. Golden Temple
The Golden Temple in Amritsar is a beautiful Gurudwara. One of the holiest places for the Sikh community, the Gurudwara has its own charm and provides peace and prosperity to the visitors. The place provides food to the hungry every day in communal meals known as Langar which is open for everyone.
10. Siddhi Vinayak Temple
Dedicated to Lord Ganesha, this temple has visitors from all over the world and is often in the limelight. Almost all the Bollywood celebs come here before the release of their movie or release from jail. People believe that their wishes are actually granted by the Lord and the temple is one of the most visited temple of India.
