NGT has asked the Manja Association of India to submit a report on harmful effects of these strings to Central Pollution Control Board. The ban would apply on cotton, nylon and Chinese glass and metal coated manjas.

As the festival of Makar Sankranti is approaching the case was put by People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). It sighted that these threads are not only harmful for birds and animals but are equally harmful for humans and has caused deaths in few cases. PETA also said that minor children are employed for production of these threads and the glass and metal powder causes serious respiratory and health problems.
