The Met Gala or the Met Ball, formally called the Costume Institute Gala is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. Each year the event celebrates the theme of the Costume Institute exhibition and guests are expected to choose their outfit to match the theme of the exhibits. This year’s theme was Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology. We bring you some delightful tech-y dresses from the 2016 Met Gala wore by celebrities such as Allison Williams, Taylor Swift, Claire Danes and Emma Watson:
1. Karolina Kurkova
Model Kurkova really took the theme of the Gala to heart; she showed the world what happens when high fashion meets cutting-edge technology. She was seen wearing a dress designed by Marchesa and IBM’s Watson team. The ‘cognitive dress’ was covered in LED lights that changed colors based on what people tweeted about the two brands throughout the night, according to US Weekly.
2. Allison Williams
Actress Williams’ gown was designed by Peter Pilloto, following the latest and hottest trends both in technology and fashion, that is, 3D-printing. The dress had 3D-printed white flowers, as Williams revealed to her Snapchat followers. She wrote on her account “My 3-D Printed flowers and I are on our way!” before the event.
3. Julie Macklowe
Julie Macklowe’s jumpsuit was not made with any recyclable material or lights or 3D printing but it definitely gave the look of a futuristic robot. She got the shutterbugs’ attention, so what if the dress didn’t do anything special! Her look could be named robot chic for sure!
4. Claire Danes
Dane’s baby-blue dress looked stunning on the Red carpet, until the lights went out and the dress stole the spotlight. The Cinderella-inspired ball gown was designed by Zac Posen and was made of ultra-thin fiber-optic fibers woven into organza which lit up to turn the fairy tale dress into a sci-fi wonder. The dress literally glowed up in the darkness, recreating the Cinderella feel!
5. Emma Watson
Emma Watson went for the eco-friendly look. The dress, designed by Calvin Klein, was fashioned from recycled plastic bottles. The bottles were used since the designer along with the consulting team firm Eco-Age worked a project together called the Green Carpet Challenge.
6. Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift stepped out for this year’s event as Co-Chair. She rocked the red carpet in a Louis Vuitton dress and cutout boots, rounding her style with a grunge-glam beauty look. She upheld her prestigious title by stepping in a bejewelled, ruffled dress with side-cut outs and knee high lace-up stilettos.
7. Selena Gomez
Selena arrived in a studded, sleek white dress and leather bustier designed by Nicolas Ghesquiere for Louis Vuitton. She paired it with a ponytail. Selena’s chunky high heeled combat boots were the real statement piece of her look! The dress was sleeveless and embellished with crystals that looked like polka dots. Everyone was obsessed with dress that showed ample cleavage. She also accessorized with silver bangles, a cool box clutch and she looked cool and punk!
8. Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid
Former One Direction star Zayn Malik and his supermodel girlfriend Gigi made their red carpet debut as a couple at this year’s Met Gala. While Gigi looked elegant in gunmetal Tommy Hilfiger sequin bodice and sheer skirt, Zayn decided to stick to the technology theme and wear metal plates by Versace over his classic tuxedo. They both looked fair enough!
