India is a country where Taj Mahal is proudly called the symbol of love, but also a country where love is seen as a crime. A country where religion comes before love and traditions blind people, where caste is more important than the lives of people and where killings takes place in name of “honour”. India has more than 1,000 murders every year linked to 'love relationships'. One man established an organization to protect love birds. Mr. Sanjoy Sachdev is the chairman of an organization called Love Commandos.
Sachdev, who was a journalist, started the organization with the help of a few volunteers, distressed upon encountering news of families committing honour killings on their own children on a daily basis.
India is a country which is known for arranged marriages and arranged marriages are considered as a norm. Those who don’t follow this practice face stiff opposition from their family members. In more conservative communities, the young love-birds are even killed.
The organization receives more than 300 calls per day now. The basic thing they do for people is to provide them shelter and shield them for threatening and honour killing. They have a website where they have given the helpline numbers too. Mr. Sanjoy and his Commandos were featured on the popular show ”Satyamev Jayate”, after which the number of calls increased, and now they have shelter homes all over India.
Here’s the video about the Love Commandos:
