Ever watched a Hindi film song and instantly felt hit by wanderlust? Hindi movies, with their larger-than-life sets and picturesque locations are a window to the world for so many of us! While the traveller in all of us has stared hungrily at the Swiss Alps in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, there are many other quaint locations which have served as the backdrop for film songs. 1. Tu Jaane Na: Pamukkale, Turkey
The melancholy song from Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009) showed Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif amidst pristine pools of water and deep blue ice. Or so we thought. The stunning grey-blue backdrop was in fact calcium carbonate deposits and hot springs in southwestern Turkey!
2. Dum Dara Dum: Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal, Tamil Nadu
This melodious song from Guru (2007) has as its backdrop the imposing pillars and vast courtyards of the 17th century palace in Madurai where the song Kehna Hi Kya from Bombay (1995) was also picturised.
3. Khuda Jaane: Alberobello, Italy
Remember the part of the Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008) song where the lead pair plays hide-and-seek in a village straight out of fairytales? The place is Alberobello in southern Italy, known for its peculiar trulli houses: white plastered cottages with grey stone roofs.
4. Aise Na Mujhe Tum Dekho: Kangra Fort, Himachal Pradesh
A classic from the 1977 film Darling Darling, this song was shot in the precincts of the Kangra fort, the ancient stronghold of the royal Katoch dynasty.
5. Bismil: Martand Sun Temple, Jammu & Kashmir
This dramatic song from Haider (2014) was shot among the ruins of the Martand Sun Temple, 8 km from Anantnag.The 8th century temple also served as the backdrop for another classic song from Aandhi (1975), Tere Bina Zindagi Se Koi.
6. Ishq Sufiyana: Bidar Fort, Karnataka
Sequences of this song from The Dirty Picture (2011) were shot in the Bidar Fort, Karnataka. This 700-year old resilient fort of the Bahmanid dynasty also makes regular appearances in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada films.
7. Dil Haara: Milos, Greece
While Tashan (2008) is remembered for all the wrong reasons, its beautifully picturised songs need to be acknowledged. The island of Milos in Greece with its unusually shaped white volcanic rocks and the blue Aegean Sea is where the energetic track was picturised.
8. Hawa Hawa: Sychrov Castle, Czech Republic
Rockstar (2011) has captured the European setting in astounding detail. Even Hawa Hawa, shot in this Neo-Gothic castle 70 km from Prague, includes a famous Grimm Brothers story tailored to fit the story of the lead pair!
9. Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna Hai: Chittorgarh Fort, Rajasthan
This melody from the 1965 classic Guide has Dev Anand looking at Waheeda Rehman’s reflection in one of the mirrors at this fort. This was actually inspired by the lore of Alauddin Khilji catching a glimpse of the legendary queen Padmini in the same mirror. Fascinating, isn’t it?
10. Meethi Boliyan: Diu Fort, Diu
The breathtaking dive by the trio from Kai Po Che (2013) was performed off the fort of Diu. The 16th century Portuguese construction has a stunning view of the Arabian Sea and is a must-visit on every Diu visitor’s itinerary.
