A seven-month-old suffering from polymelia was successfully operated by the doctors in Delhi. The toddler named Karam was born in Iraq with additional limbs. This condition generally occurs when conjoined twins are not fully formed.
Doctors at Jaypee Hospital performed the surgery to remove the unnecessary limbs in three stages. Karam’s father Sarwed Ahmed Nadar came all the way to India from Iraq for this particular surgery.
According to a report in NDTV, there are just five or six known such cases known worldwide.
The doctors started the surgery by removing the limbs sticking out from his stomach before correcting a cardiac complication.
The second stage witnessed the “PA Band” surgery so that after the treatment, the baby’s left ventricle can control his entire body’s blood circulation.
The whole surgery ended with the final procedure where doctors removed all the extra limbs.
Horrified at first, Karam’s parents are very happy and thankful to the doctors who operated Karam. They are also hoping that now, Karam will get to spend a normal life.
