As soon as the Delhi University student Gurmehar Kaur’s Facebook post against the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) went viral, she alleged that she started getting "rape threats".
Gurmehar Kaur is a daughter of Kargil martyr Captain Mandeep Singh and a student of Lady Sri Ram Ram College Delhi. According to her ever since she stood up for students allegedly beaten up by ABVP activists, she has received rape threats, with one man, in particular, writing a detailed description of how he would rape her in the comments section on her Facebook profile picture. She is also getting a barrage of hate messages over her stand on the issue.
While talking to ndtv, she said, "I've been getting a lot of threats on social media. When you open the profile picture that I changed, you keep seeing there are people threatening me and calling me an anti-nationalist. I think it's very scary when people threaten you with violence or with rape. There is this guy called Rahul and he's given a very detailed explanation in a comment saying how he would like to rape me. That is very scary,"
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal came out to support her:
