The inspiration behind the Barbie is Ibtihaj Muhammad who was the first US woman to compete at the Olympics in a hijab. She also won the bronze at Rio Olympics, last year.
When asked about this, she expressed her excitement termed this as “a childhood dream come true”.
“Today I’m proud to know that little girls who wear a hijab and, just as powerfully, those who don’t, can play with a Barbie who chooses to wear a headscarf," she said in an interview to Junkee.
She hopes that the new doll would inspire little girls of colour “to embrace what makes them unique.”
