With a billion eyes set on the Women's vault event at Rio Olympics 2016 today, Dipa Karmakar, India's first female gymnast, finished a close 4th losing the bronze medal by mere 0.150 points.
Dipa performed the dangerous Produnova vault again but it failed to get her the required points to make it to the podium. She was in the third position averaging 15.066 in her two attempts until Simione Biles from USA scored an impressive15.966 to clinch gold and push Dipa to 4th position in the end. Russia’s Maria Paseka and Switzerland’s Giulia Steingruber claimed silver and bronze respectively.
Despite the hearthbreak, we certainly hope that Dipa has inspired many other athletes from India to take this neglected sport more seriously.
