Last week, Cristiano Ronaldo became the first ever sportsperson to reach 100 million followers on Instagram. And, in order to mark this occasion, the Portuguese forward went live on the social networking site to address his fans.
In the video, Ronaldo mentioned that India is a place he wanted to visit - and it could be as soon as July.
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) also confirmed that it has contacted the Real Madrid superstar and if everything goes well, he will attend the FIFA U-17 World Cup draw which will be held in Mumbai on July 7th.
“We are talking to Portugal Football Federation. We also are trying to interact with Ronaldo’s agent. If he is free on that particular day, he will be gracing the FIFA U-17 World Cup draw function in Mumbai on July 7,” said AIFF president Praful Patel, reports The Hindustan Times.
The organisers of the tournament have already confirmed that World Cup-winning Spanish footballer Carles Puyol will visit India to mark the launch of ticket sales for the tournament which is scheduled in India in October.
The AIFF is taking all sorts of efforts to make the U-17 World Cup a grand spectacle. Hence, in a bid to add more celebrity power to the tournament, it is trying to bring the Sultan of Stepover to India. While Puyol himself is a legend, Ronaldo’s presence would certainly aggrandize the tournament to a whole new level among the Indian fans.
The date seems to be convenient for the four-time Ballon d’Or winner, as his club season with Real Madrid will end on June 4 when they take on Juventus in the UEFA Champions League final. After that, he is scheduled to play in the Confederations Cup 2017 in Russia, which is slated to commence on June 17 and end on July 2.
The FIFA U-17 World Cup kicks off on October 6th and the final is in Kolkata on the 28th of the same month. India will be featured in the 24-team event, and it will be the first time that India will be hosting and playing in a FIFA tournament.
