The Chefs For This Year’s Durga Puja Will Be The Sex Workers Of Sonagachi

The training will be conducted by SFDC and nearly 30 sex workers will be taught to cook various dishes for the food pavilions.

Durga Puja is one of the greatest occasions that is celebrated in India and when we talk about Dhunuchi Dance, the yodeling and women draped in white-red sarees, your mind just knows that we are talking about West Bengal.

To mark this Pujo, the sex workers from Sonagachi will be reportedly seen congregating and donning chef’s hats to prepare food.

For those who don’t know- Sonagachi is South Asia’s and India’s largest red light district which is located in Kolkata.

An NGO named Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee (DMSC) is collaborating with State Fisheries Development Corporation (SFDC) to make this project work by training the sex workers.

SDFC managing director, Soumyajit Das told PTI,

During Pujas we run about eight food pavilions in various parts of Kolkata and two in Bangalore. Most of our cooks have been sent to Bangalore. As we need cooks we approached Durbar and they agreed.

He added,

We will be training the manpower in both cooking and in fish processing — right from handling a live fish to packaging a finished product. They will cook for our food pavilions during Pujas.

Once the training is done, the selected workers will be seen working as chefs in eight food pavilions. Post the festival, these workers will be getting employment by the state fisheries department.

Das concluded by saying,

As we need people in our processing units where we regularly have to cater to huge orders from various food chains, online grocery shops and super markets, their (sex workers') employment will not be limited to the pujas.
