The movie which was declared a "blockbuster" by Box Office India. Our official entry in Gloden Globe as well as Academy Awards, Best Foreign Language Film nomination in BAFTA in 2006 and the winner of Filmfare Award for the Best Movie, did a history blunder that you might have missed.
The movie portrayed the killing of General Dyer, the person responsible for Jallianwalla Baugh Massacre factually wrong. They showed the lead British Actress Alice Patten who played the character of Su in the movie narrate the story of Udham Singh, the freedom fighter who assassinated General Dyer, also called the Butcher of Amritsar back in 1919, to avenge the killing of Jallianwala Baugh. Well, the truth is General Dyer was NEVER KILLED/ ASSASSINATED! Here is the complete story:
General Edwar Dyer on 13 April 1919 ordered the killing of the people who gathered at the Jallianwala Baugh, Amritsar to celebrate the festival of Baisakhi. What might have made him a hero in his motherland, made him synonymous to a mass murderer in our country and that is the reason that led to the blood burning Indians taking the stand to revolt against his tyranny.
Michael Dwyer was the governer of Punjab when the massacre happened. Udham Singh never killed General Dyer but instead, he assassinated this governer Michael Dwyer as he considered him responsible and thus became the courageous firebrand of the freedom struggle.
General Dyer, on the other hand, died of cerebral haemorrhage and arteriosclerosis in the year 1927.
Related to this subject, recently we also shared that Soojit Sircar is planing to put on the floor his dream project, a movie based on the life of Udham Singh.
The historic movie thus got this history-changing event wrong!
