With the recent buzz of Filfare Awards, we dug to the roots of filmy affairs a little deeper and here is an interesting story you must know. The Nightingale of India, the music legend Lata Mangeshkar refused to accept her first Filfare Award. And here is the reason:
Tracing the history, this most prestigious award ceremony of Indian Film Industry started in the year 1953 and was initially known as 'The Clares' after the renowned film critic Clare Mendonca. The statuette of this award, the famous Lady in Black is believed to have been an inspired creation based on Clare Mandonca.
However, in 1958, Lata Mangeshkar received the award for best playback singer female for her melodious contribution in the movie Madhumati. She was called on stage where she refused to accept the award and the reason was that 'It resembled a naked lady'.
The audience as well as the organisers were taken aback and later she was given the trophy wrapped in a handkerchief. The singer who made the world go crazy with her sweet voice had strong philosophies to live by indeed.
