Devru village of Sonepat district saw a strange complaint being filed recently. A 22-year-old girl filed a complaint against relatives for threatening to kill her if she continued to play cricket and attend college.
According to the FIR, the girl, a second-year student of BA is passionate about playing cricket in her college. This was enough to infuriate her brothers, who then coerced her to drop out of college, much against her will.
“They beat me whenever I express my desire to study and play cricket. My younger brother threatens to shoot me dead if I join college again,” the girl said.
The girl expressed that she wants to live her life on her terms and make choices she thinks are best for her. She says it was disappointing to not have any of her teachers or mentors or even her kin support her in her decisions.
She told the police that she wants to stay separately from her brothers and pursue whatever she likes without the fear of their wrath.
The brothers, of which the elder one is an employee at the state Home guards and the younger one being a first-year BA student, were booked by the police.
They face charges under sections 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (crime committed with common intention) of the Indian Penal Code, on the basis of the girl’s grievance.
Sonepat Sadar’s police station in-charge, Dalvir Dangi said, “She had come to us with a complaint on Sunday, following which we had verbally warned her brothers to let her study and play cricket. But, when she complained again two days later of the same behaviour, we registered a criminal case against her brothers.”
