A man who considers ‘love’ and ‘emotions’ as weaknesses and who spites on sentiments and tries his best to avoid them, is perhaps as much a human as you are. Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s renowned character in BBC’s Tv series will stay with us forever.
After our first article on “BBC’s Sherlock proves that he is only as much human as you are: Part I’ we are back with its sequel. So without much ado, let’s dive in
1. When Sherlock Saves John’s Life
S03 E01 “The Empty Hearse”
After a great Shock to John when Sherlock returns back from his death (which he had faked), John gets kidnapped while he is on his way to 221B, Baker Street. Mary gets a text and she runs to Sherlock who’s the only one who can decode it. Two of them then set off to rescue John on a bike. As he tries to search for him, he leaps from the bike shouting John’s name, emphasizing the concern in his voice and the terror of losing his best friend. He finds that John’s buried in the pile of kindling bonfire. Horrified, he steps himself in fire and pulls out John safe and sound.
2. When Sherlock saves Mrs. Hudson
S02 E01 “A Scandal in Belgravia”
When Sherlock returned home to see the door chipped and the cleaning supplies abandoned at the bottom of the stairs, he knew something was wrong. When pushed open the living room doors, he saw a few Americans, one of them pointing his gun at Mrs Hudson.
Even though Mrs Hudson wasn’t their ‘housekeeper’, she always cleaned after him, got him his meals and supper teas and took care of him like he was her own son. Sherlock also loved her back in his own way. "Nobody hurts Mrs Hudson", he said and he saved her and threw the American out of the window. When asked by Lestrade how many times, he simply said, ‘I lost the count.’
“Mrs Hudson leave Baker Street? England would fall.” Was something Sherlock said when Watson suggested to keep her away from the Baker Street.
We all have different ways of expressing love, this was Sherlock’s.
3. When John forgives Sherlock
S03 E01 “The Empty Hearse”
Ever since Sherlock came alive from his ‘Fake death’, John refused to forgive him. “I don’t care how you did it, Sherlock. I want to know why,” was something that John kept asking him.
After Sherlock faked his death, John missed him more than we missed Sherlock. He was in a massive loss and when Sherlock returned, he was in great shock: both happy and startled. Why did Sherlock had to lie to him?
When they both go to refuse the bomb in Samarata Road tube station only to find out that the whole carriage was the bomb, Sherlock, knowing how to defuse the bomb, tried to trick John (for the last time, maybe) by telling him that they were helpless and they were to die. Triumphing over the sorry and I love you moments that he secretly loved and they never get to share, Sherlock was heartfelt and felt loved when John portrayed how much he meant to him even after all that had happened.
After Sherlock flipped the switched (surprisingly, John wasn’t that mad), it only ended with tears, smiles and more shared bond of love than ever.
4. Sherlock’s Best Man Speech on John’s Wedding
S03 E02 “The Sign of Three”
Everyone was afraid if Sherlock would be able to give the Best Man Speech at the wedding. We are talking about a man who would yell at crying women and who would tell children that Santa doesn’t exsit. But they all forgot how John was the closest a human ever got to Sherlock and even though Sherlock never articulated it, he valued and loved John in his own little ways. He sends an urgent SMS to Lestrade for help and also tries to read the book ‘How to write an unforgettable best man speech’.
After all the hard work when he finally articulated his feelings, we all needed soft-tissues. He ended up in this way:
“I didn't understand I was being asked to be best man, it is because I never expected to be anybody's best friend, and certainly not the best friend of the bravest and kindest and wisest human being I have ever had the good fortune of knowing.”
Sherlock is considered to be different than us. While we all have tried deducing and observing and in a way imitating Sherlock, we all have ended up thinking that we can never be like him. But this article is for all those of you who think so. To let you all know that Sherlock is as much a human as you are and nothing and nobody can stop you from being such a legendary detective like him.
There’s a little Sherlock in you, let it find its own way out.
