In a time when we are openly talking about sexual harassment and when many women are coming out and speaking about their experiences, this incident from Madhya Pradesh is saddening.
A newborn girl was found wrapped in a polythene bag covered in ants, near a dumpster in Madhya Pradesh. Bhopal Police suspect that the baby was abandoned for being a girl.
Dheeraj Rathore, who runs a tea stall nearby, discovered her in a bin, swarming with ants, in the early hours of Saturday.
“I was passing through the bin when I heard the cries of a baby.I was shocked to see an infant's head sticking out of a red polybag in a dumpster among the bushes,” he said.
She is now being cared for in hospital after being found by a tea stall owner in Bhopal. The baby was severely underweight and was covered in ants.
Rathore called for help from two friends, and together they and his two friends cleared the insects from the infant's body, wrapped her in a cloth and took her to a nearby hospital.
The baby girl was then taken to the hospital. Medical staff said that she was in critical condition. Her body also had marks and bruises which strongly indicated to physical abuse.
Police have registered a case and are looking for the baby’s parents.
While the country is coming out in support of the 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' campaign, an incident this extreme is not only shocking but also shameful.
