For many years now we’ve been watching Bollywood movies with a typical plot; where a girl from an affluent family gets settled with a guy from a poor family. Sounds clichéd but this is how the story would be woven in those days. With time, Bollywood has certainly moved on, but it seems that there still exist such incidents where we can clearly relate the real stories to reel ones.
One such story is that of Angeline Francis Khoo, who is the daughter of Malaysian tycoon, Khoo Kay Peng and former Miss Malaysia, Pauline Chai.
According to Forbes, Khoo Kay Peng has a net worth around $300 million.
Hailing from an affluent family, Angeline didn’t consider money as a barrier while falling in love. She listened to her heart and married Jedidiah Francis.
Caribbean-born Jed is a data scientist and fell in love with Angeline at the Oxford University.
Typically, like every father, her father turn down this proposal. But Angeline stood by him and gave up everything for her true love.
In an interview with DailyMail she said,
I believed Dad’s stance was wrong, so there was no question about what was right. I’ve been fortunate to have that perspective: you can have money and it’s a blessing; it allows you to do things and gives you options, but there are also things that come with it, such as control.
It’s been ten years now, and Jed and Angeline are leading a happy married life. Though she said it wasn’t easy as it sounds,
I always had a budget, but it became critical. To me it was the hardest but the best time of our lives. I think Jed would say the same. It was the most bonding; it gives you a foundation.
Mum was really good about making us aware of people in less fortunate circumstances, but unless you experience what it’s like to worry about how you’re going to pay for your food and bills, you can’t ever really get it.
Someone has said it right, money can’t always buy happiness. Sadly, Angeline’s mother went through a hard phase of her life when she and her husband thought to split.
The Malaysian press covered the divorce extensively and in this crisis, Angeline stood by her mom because it was her mom who supported her all through her life when her dad was busy striking deals in dollars.
Talking about her father, she said,
He was only around once or twice a year. We knew that when he came we would be called into his office and given a list of things to fix: “Your grades are not good enough, you’re not behaving, you’re not presenting yourself properly.
He had everything: a loyal, beautiful, smart wife and children who love him regardless of whether he has money or not. I feel that at his age he’s vulnerable. When you don’t have that much longer ahead of you, you shouldn’t spend your days being angry and resentful.
Having a close look at their family we realized one thing- love, happiness and peace are not bound to money, it is the bonding and togetherness that stays forever.
