Popular football maestro and former Argentinian footballer Lionel Messi has been sentenced to 21 months of prison for tax fraud. According to the records, uptil now, Messi has committed three tax crimes and has been fined 2 million euros.
In 2007, Lionel Messi’s father Jorge Messi, was also sentenced to 2 years of prison for defrauding Spain of 4.1 million euros for two years.
Messi stated at the trial, “The truth is that I knew nothing. As my father explained, I was devoted to playing football, I trusted my father, I trusted the lawyers he had chosen to run things and I had no idea about anything.” He added, “I signed the contracts because I trust my father. He is my father and it obviously never crossed my mind that he would fool me or disappoint me so i signed because he told me to, because I trusted him, and as I said before, the lawyers told us to do it that way.”
Well, two million euros are not a big deal for Messi, but his tarnished reputation definitely is! However, good news for his fans is that they will continue to watch him play since any first non-voilent offence with a sentence less than 2 years (24 months) can be suspended as per Spanish laws.
