Shocked by the title? This might very well come true if Elon Musk, founder of Tesla accepts Nitin Gadkari’s offer for testing Hyperloop, a superfast mass transit system, on the Mumbai Pune Expressway!
In a bid to revolutionise mass transport in India while being environmentally responsible, the Union Minister for Roads, Highways, Ports and Shipping met with officials from SpaceX, which is owned by Musk, in the US. Speaking in an infrastructure summit in Mumbai, he said, “I just offered them ... they want some road for experimental purpose. I offered them the westerly bypass of Pune connected to the Express Highway. The idea is they can take an experiment between Mumbai and Pune as a pilot project”.
Hyperloop is a system where bus-sized capsules are propelled through tubes using compressed air. High speeds of up to 1,120 km per hour can be achieved with this technology, which is already being experimented with by SpaceX on a test track in Nevada, US.
If this comes to fruition, Gadkari said, the distance between Nagpur, his hometown, and Mumbai- a distance of 800-odd km- could be traversed in a mere 35 minutes.
While he has invited the company to Pune for test runs of Hyperloop and has even offered land free of cost around major ports, he maintained that the product should first be developed.
