Josh Radnor was allergic to dogs and paramedics were always on call due to Josh’s close proximity to dogs while shooting courtesy Robin’s love for dogs and Ted’s love for Robin. But they did away with the canines in Season Two itself.

The three main characters are actually impersonations of the creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas. When they were invited to pitch a network series, they flashed back to 1997, when Bays lived at Thomas's apartment, which he shared with his longtime girlfriend (now-wife) Rebecca, complaining about being single. So basically Bays became Ted, Thomas became Marshall, and Rebecca became Lily. Some episodes were inspired by their real life incidents.
