Clone trains basically follow the path of its original train after a small time lapse.

Central Railways officials explained, “Indian Railways has already decided to introduce clone trains on peak routes following high demand for waiting listed passengers. These trains will be run within an hour of the original train's departure."

Mumbai and Pune are the most busiest routes throughout the year and during festivals like Diwali, trains and waiting lists are over-crowded because all the students and people living away from their family and relatives come back home to celebrate the major festival. The private buses take advantage of this and hike their fares just for a one–way trip.

The clone train and the original train have equivalent fares and run in the same time span, making it easier for the passengers to reach their destinations around the same time as they had initially planned.

A senior official confirmed that the passengers will be informed about their berths in the Clone Train soon after the reservation charts for the original scheduled trains are drawn up four hours before departure; saying, "There won't be any need for last-minute panic about seat and berth allotments. We expect that passengers would get 100% reservation in these trains."

A similar proposal has been sent to the Mumbai Headquarters because of the long waiting list during October end and November start.
