Time and again the women of Westeros have been the catalysts in all the plots and plans fuelling them with their conniving minds- but shadowed by emotions and motherly instincts. They did not garner the attention at once, but as the seasons progressed these 10 badass women have taken centre stage and given momentum to the entire series.
1. Catelyn of Houses Tully and Stark, Riverrun and Winterfell
Played by: Michelle Fairley
She was a fierce woman ready to go to great lengths for her family and children. She braved her husband’s death and supported her son Robb in his fight against the Realm. So far she is the only prominent woman character who has been killed in the gory series. There was also speculation that she might return to avenge her death as Lady Stoneheart.
2. Cersei of Houses Lannister Baratheon, Casterly Rock, Now King’s Landing
Played by: Lena Headey
The root cause of all disasters in Westeros, the ex Queen Regent was forcefully reduced to Queen Mother as a result of her own misdoings. The list of her ploys against everyone except Jaime and her children have set the wheels rolling for the entire series. She is undoubtedly the most vicious lady around and has no qualms about it. Even in mourning for her son, she is up in arms against the world, ruining Tyrion and many others. The High Sparrow tried to contain and make her atone for her crimes, but the Walk and mistreatment has angered her to the world’s end and further seasons will see her eccentricities rise, probably fulfilling the theory that she will be the next Mad Queen
3. Margaery of House Tyrell, Highgarden, Now King’s Landing
Played by: Natalie Dormer
She is the reigning Queen, something she has always striven to be. She is also straight out for marriage and has had three husbands so far- Renly, Joffrey and currently Tommen. Her cunning nature is carefully masked by her infectious smile and she has got her way this far. Once cornered by the High Sparrow, her conniving mind has managed to get her out of that tight spot. She also threatens Cersei, constantly involving herself in the cattiest fight in the Red Keep.
4. Olenna of House Tyrell, Highgarden
Played by: Dame Diana Rigg
Olenna Tyrell does not hide the fact that the Realm owes her House big time, courtesy her family’s generous donations to King’s Landing. Her sharp wit and her ability to anticipate and control political intrigue makes her, a real street smart character. She is portrayed as aloof but base, noble but sarcastic. What she says is quotable and hilarious, smart and observant. She is also hell bent on siding with her errant grandchildren Margaery and Loras, blind to their shenanigans.
5. Arya of House Stark, City of Braavos
Played by: Maisie Williams
Arya is in a league of her own with her tough attitude and buoyant nature. Losing her parents at an impressionable age, she is the one who is far away from all the mainstream drama of Westeros and is training with the Faceless Men to exact vengeance. She endured all the tortuous training by the Waif and Jaqen H’ghar and even outsmarted them when the time came. A girl now is Arya Stark of Winterfell, and she is going home!
6. Brienne of House Tarth, Evenfall Hall
Played by: Gwendoline Christie
The only woman warrior on the crew, Brienne has been that honourable Lady whose courageous Knighthood has inspired all throughout the seasons. She is tough and loyal, and tries her best to accomplish what is assigned to her. She also has a maternal instinct which comes to fore when she is with Podrick. Her loyalty towards Renly first and then Catelyn and her daughters is one to be reckoned with. And while the world is talking about the wildling Tormund and her, I still am keen on the chemistry between her and Jaime- their long lovable history with the Oathkeeper and their experiences together all point to that!
7. Sansa of House Stark... Not Bolton or Lannister, Winterfell
Played by: Sophie Turner
Her entry in the first episode as a petty girl who just wanted to be a petty queen gave us the impression that she was to be a typical girl drooling over riches and palaces. And she continued her damsel-in-distress act for most seasons - brutalized by Cersei and Joffrey, married to Tyrion, then used by Littlefinger and played dumb to all this to the hilt. She basically needed a wakeup call to take arms against all the tyranny that was forced upon her and her ordeal with Ramsay Bolton became just that. She is now back in the North, all set to avenge her family and be a true Stark at last.
8. Lady Melisandre, The Red Woman of Asshai
Played by: Carice van Houten
Getting on everyone’s nerves and forever mumbling that the “Night is Dark and full of Terrors”, the most religious character on the Game of Thrones is not so holy after all. The Red Priestess is charged with killing Renly through blood magic, blindfolding Stannis into defeat and ruthlessly burning little Shireen in order to obtain the “Prince that was Promised” to her by the Lord of Light. However she became a hot favourite in this latest season with her ‘young by the day and old by the night nude act’. Bringing Jon back from the dead also earned her some goodwill.
9. Yara of House Greyjoy, Iron Islands
Played by: Gemma Whelan
She has been raised a boy who would become king one day. She is also the protective elder sister who loves little Theon unconditionally. She is all set to win back the Salt Throne from her uncle and has more than a thousand ships at her command. The makers also played the lesbian card through her with ultimate swag. A sharp tongue and alert brain makes her a tough contender for Badass Number One!
10. Daenerys of House Targaryen, Meereen
Played by: Emilia Clarke
Daenerys Targaryen, the First of Her Name, Queen of Meereen, Queen of the Andals and the Rhoynar and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, Protector of the Realm, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, called Daenerys Stormborn, the Unburnt, Mother of Dragons. A long name, but one to match her accomplishments. Dany is the strongest girl of all in GoT. Her tyrannical days with the Dothraki to wooing Khal Drogo, to forming an army, her tales of Qarth, House of the Undying, freeing the slaves, her battles for Meereen against the Masters and the Second Sons, Sons of the Harpy, to her uncontrollable dragons to her own streaks of madness like her father make one of the most important character - one whom everyone is waiting to see winning the Iron Throne.
